7 Signs of Gutter Damage on Your Home

damaged rain gutter

If you’re like most homeowners, your gutters aren’t something you often think about. They need biannual gutter cleaning, but otherwise, their purpose is incredibly simple.

It’s not until gutters aren’t doing what they’re supposed to that you realize just how important they are!

WHAT DO GUTTERS DO?

Gutters and downspouts go virtually unnoticed on most roofs in Vancouver. They fade into the home’s exterior unless the homeowner decided on copper or wood … building materials that are definitely designed to stand out! Most home exteriors are made of durable but lightweight aluminum or vinyl siding.

The purpose of rain gutters is to provide a route of minimal resistance for rain to get off your roof as fast as possible. When they are in good shape, your rain gutters will direct runoff away from the foundation and landscaping, protecting your home’s exterior from mold and mildew, the concrete and pavement and basement from leaking water, and the rain gutters themselves from wear and rust.

When they are damaged, it can lead to thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your house and property.

ARE YOUR GUTTERS DAMAGED?

Gutter damage is too easy to fix to be the reason for any major home repairs! Inspecting your gutters is simple and safe. If you identify any of the following issues, it’s a pretty strong indication that your gutters have some kind of damage.

Once you notice a gutter issue, you can decide if it’s something you feel comfortable repairing or remedying by yourself or if it’s something you should trust a gutter specialist for.

Sitting Water Near Your Home

Standing water is a good sign that your gutters or downspouts are not sending the rain runoff away from your house the way they are supposed to. Pooling water can result in mold, weakening of your foundation, and provides the perfect habitat for mosquitoes. Plus, it will leave the areas surrounding your home perpetually soggy and muddy.

Mold or Mildew

Either one of these is a bad sign, whether you see mold or mildew on the gutters or on the exterior of your home. Mold and mildew indicate that there is a lot of moisture around that area – a potential issue with the rain gutters could be the cause. Remember that mold and mildew are likely to appear on the north side of a home anyway, so if that’s where these substances are growing, it may just be because that area gets very little direct sunlight on it. This is a scenario where the advice and expertise of a gutter specialist in Vancouver would be helpful.

Rain Pouring Over the Gutter

You’ll have to wait until it’s raining to discover this type of gutter problem. Hopefully this doesn’t mean your gutters are damaged. It could just be that the gutter is clogged with debris and needs to be cleaned out. Either way, you need to have it looked at ASAP.

Basement Leaks

Based on the design of your basement, the leaking might be caused by any number of things. The standing water issue we discussed earlier could definitely cause a basement leak. Egress windows and even cinder block walls will only keep out so much water. That’s why it is necessary to keep your gutters in working order!

Landscaping or Lawn Damage

Rain gutters empty directly onto the ground in most cases, and landscaping should be laid out to work with this water flow to help it disperse into the ground. But, a gutter leak or clogged gutter will cause rainfall to overflow or pool in areas where it shouldn’t. This pooling water can destroy plants by force or by overwatering. It can also displace flower bed building materials like rock or mulch.

Water Marks

Water marks are a visible sign that there is a lot of moisture on a surface. Water marks are left behind even if standing water has evaporated or dissipated. You usually find water marks under the rain gutters or behind the downspouts. This is a usually a sign that water is streaming down the outside of the gutters and not staying inside of them.

Visible Gutter Damage

The last sign of gutter damage is by far the simplest to find. If your gutters are bent, sagging or cracked, they definitely have damage. Following a storm, it’s a smart idea to walk around your house to assess any damage to the roof, outer walls, and rain gutters. These inspections are in addition to your standard home inspections.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR GUTTERS?

Here are some easy tips Vancouver Gutter Solutions recommends to prevent gutter damage:

Clean your gutters at least one time each year. You can lengthen the amount of time between gutter repairs by keeping them cleaned out regularly. As with anything else, the better you care for your gutters, the less problems you’ll have with them.

The optimal time to clean out gutters is during the spring, but to be cautious, give them a good cleaning in the fall, too. A lot of homeowners clean their gutters on their own, but there are many local gutter cleaning companies that provide this service so you don’t have to deal with the work or the risk.

Inspect your gutters often. Signs of gutter damage can be visible from the outside of the gutters. A quick inspection – with both feet firmly on the ground – will reveal any of the issues we discussed above.

We’d suggest that you complete an exterior home inspection following each season to confirm that your gutters are functioning properly.

When you see signs of gutter damage, act fast. Taking care of an issue before it becomes too bad can save you a lot of time and money. A small crack, for example, can be sealed, or the section of gutter with the crack can be replaced very affordably and quickly.

But, if you let the problem go on too long, you might end up making repairs in your basement, replacing expensive vinyl siding or redoing an entire area of landscaping.
